Eccleshall and its surrounding area was mainly forested in Anglo-Saxon times, though the name of 'Eclēs-halh' (meadow by the church) indicates that there was already a church from Romanic, pre-Anglo-Saxon times. This was the principal, perhaps only, significant settlement in an extensive tract of about 100 square miles where the headwaters of the Sow collected. This area was granted to the canons of Lichfield, and round about the reign of the great King Offa a substantial part of the Eccleshall forest was being cleared and settled, as the place names in the area attest.
The Eccleshall Guide website includes all things Eccleshall: businesses, clubs, churches and so on, as well as some things not covered by Eccleshall businesses in those categories which we hope you will find useful.
It is a guide to facilities that residents and visitors to this historic town might need in order to make the most of Eccleshall.
The Guide is supported each year by businesses for which the publishers are most grateful and hope that readers will support.
Copies of the printed Eccleshall Guide are available free of charge from 1st Stop (formerly News Express) in Stafford Street and the library in High Street Eccleshall, and in The Arcade on the High Street.
We trust that this online edition of The Guide will be bookmarked on your computer!
